What's in a name...

Today while online looking at the latest “News” I found an article on names. The article discussed how a name that a person has can give you an insight into what kind of person they will be, even down to certain jobs. Really you can tell all of that based on a name? Sure I guess if you name your child something like Hitler Mussolini Smith or something equally appalling to most people, you can guess that he may grow up to be “different”.

A linked article discussed how parents feel about their children’s names several years after the choice was made. It seems that many parents change their mind about the name they have chosen after its way to late to change. Most of them sited, changes in popular culture, difficultly with pronunciation and spelling. Aren’t these things that most people should consider before giving their child a name that will cost them years of explaining? Apparently parents are not thinking these things through. Maybe you like the name James but it’s too commercial so you change the spelling to Gaimess. If I were that kid I would hope I had a normal middle name and go by that. Just because you like Jersey Shore that does not mean that you should name your bundle of joy Snooki. Heck that name isn’t even good for a dog. By the way I have two female dogs, and even they have fairly normal names; Chloe and Jovie.

Don’t get me wrong, I like unusual names. My hubby and I had a short list of names we agreed on for our baby while I was pregnant, for that very reason. We knew before we were even married that should we get to the point of having children that if we had a girl her first name would be Eva (said Ava). Why? Because she is named for someone who meant something to me when I was in school. Though its often mispronounced because I used a more foreign spelling I wanted to keep true to the reason I liked it. I don’t regret picking it, or the spelling and I think that it will be a name that will not sound childish or stupid in the future like some names have a tendency to.

So next time you look online at a hospital nursery and it shows you the names of all the babies that have been born, look and see has your first name appeared on the list anywhere in the past year?
